How Inspiration Beats Motivation

The garden of inspirationAs we come to the end of this first week of a new year, what is guiding you? I’d like to invite you to join me in making a commitment to using inspiration instead of motivation to move us through this year.

There is a big difference between inspiration and motivation. Motivation relies upon something outside yourself either pushing or pulling at you. You are motivated to exercise because you want to lose weight, improve your circulation, or otherwise reach some goal that either wards off harm or achieves benefits. There is something you are after, and so you discipline yourself to do what you need to do to get it done.

Inspiration, on the other hand, comes from the the Latin root inspirare, meaning to “breathe into.” It refers to animating someone with an idea or purpose. Another way of looking at it is the call of your natural, innermost self inviting you to let it express itself through your life. When the call is answered with a “Yes,” it fills you with its infinite energy and wisdom. It guides you from action to action with enthusiasm and joy.

Rejuvenating in the Garden of Self

I also like to think of strengthening one’s relationship with inspiration as cultivating one’s inner garden, and then visiting that garden frequently for spiritual and emotional rejuvenation. The more attention you pay to your garden, the more beautiful and lush it grows. And the more beautiful and lush it grows, the more it is able to nourish and comfort you. What if you could descend a set of stairs and enter your own special garden within yourself, where there is infinite love, beauty, joy, peace and vitality? How much time would you like to spend there? Are you willing to take a moment to go right now? Go ahead, close your eyes and enter.

Share Your Wisdom

How did that feel? Is there anything you regularly do to create this feeling within yourself? What is one thing someone might do each day to help them center on this part of who they are and tap into it when making a decision? Please share your idea with me, and I will try it out, then pass along the ones that had a particularly noticeable effect on me.

I am inviting you to join with me in making this a year of inspiration. Imagine what your life and your business might be like if you approached every business decision from within your inner garden. Let’s give it a try and see what happens!

Wishing you an exceptionally auspicious, joyful and productive 2015!

  1. I stay inspired constantly as well as motivated. There are external things that motivate me to action but there are things I see and read that inspire me to want to do more and do better. This year is my year I can just feel it.

  3. I use both inspiration and motivation depending upon the goal I’m trying to reach. Using inspiration works best for me when I’m trying to reach a goal that I’m passionate about but external factors usually help motivate me when I’m trying to reach a goal I’m not passionate about, but it is something that I needs to get done.

  4. Hey Indigo
Hope your 2015 is off to a good start. I loved this post. As you know with our work with the law of attraction, inspiration is where it’s at. When we feel inspired to act, we are feeling good about what we are doing, and remaining aligned with our desires. The ‘work’ seems effortless and we get more by doing less Trying to ‘get motivated’ usually doesn’t feel good and is being driven by a sense that we MUST act to get what we want, and we have to do certain things, or we won’t succeed. Great tip!
